BOM Visit to Manjimup Highlights New Forecasting Tools for Growers
Representatives from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Agriculture Sector team, Jamieson Lowe and Stephanie Dickson, recently visited Manjimup to provide an update on seasonal forecasting tools and demonstrate enhancements to the My Climate View platform available to Australian producers.
Challenging Seasonal Conditions Continue
The update comes after a notably dry winter across the South West Land Division (SWLD). July rainfall was well below average, while maximum temperatures were generally above average. Minimum temperatures ranged from average to below average. Winter chill accumulation remains above average.
As of 19th August winter chill portions were:

· Pemberton 57 CP
· Donnybrook 48 CP
· Bickley 53 CP
Climate drivers are continuing to influence seasonal outlooks. The current El Niño in the Pacific Ocean is expected to persist until at least February 2027. Most climate models are also indicating the development of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole from September, together with an increased prevalence of high-pressure systems during winter and spring. Combined, these factors are expected to reduce rainfall and increase temperatures across southern Western Australia.
Below Average Rainfall Recorded
As of 19 August, year-to-date rainfall totals remained below average across the region:
Manjimup: 587 mm
Donnybrook: 504 mm
Bickley: 443 mm
Although dams are filling up it will be something to watch over the irrigation period.

What Does Spring Look Like?
One of the key demonstrations during the visit was the updated My Climate View platform, which now links directly to seasonal forecasting information through the explore more detail box.
Current forecasts indicate a:
75% chance of receiving at least 138 mm of rainfall in Manjimup during September to November 2026. My Climate View

These forecast totals are approximately half of the rainfall received over the same period last year, highlighting the importance of ongoing monitoring and planning.

Many growers regularly access rainfall and seasonal outlook information but may have found it harder to locate key resources following recent changes to the BOM website. The BOM team highlighted several tools in the agriculture sector resources that can assist with decision-making throughout the year.
